Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel – Extended Show at the V&A

An exhibition dedicated to the work of the French Master of Design is scheduled to be extended until 10th March 2024.

From the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910 to the establishment of the House of CHANEL, this collection of her work takes an audience right through to her final collection in 1971.

There are over 200 looks, perfume, accessories and jewellery created by an influence still affecting the way that women dress in the present day.

Golden Era Hollywood stars such as Lauren Bacall and Marlene Dietrich wore her collections and these garments are just part of the highlights that see her Fashion Manifesto exhibition organised by the Palais Galliera, Fashion Museum of the City of Paris, reimagined by the V&A.

Chanel was a matriarch of her work, designing using the best fabrics and silhouettes that would go on to revolutionise her craft.

Tristram Hunt, Director of the V&A, said: “As one of the most successful fashion houses in existence, CHANEL owes much to the templates first laid down by its founder Gabrielle Chanel, over a century ago. We are delighted to be partnering with CHANEL and the Palais Galliera on this exhibition, which provides us with the opportunity to explore the origins and elements of this enduring style and to display little-known historic Chanel garments from the V&A collection.”

The exhibition presented in partnership with Palais Galliera, Fashion Museum of the City of Paris, Paris Musées.

Tickets can be bought on the Victoria and Albert Museum website See Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto · V&A (vam.ac.uk)

STRANGER THINGS: THE FIRST SHADOW

In a sleepy ordinary town comes a regular beat of worries. Joyce Maldonado wants to graduate and get out of this hole; young Jim Hopper can’t start his car and Bob Newby’s sister just won’t take his radio show seriously. Then a new arrival, Henry Creel turns up and he slowly starts to find out that it isn’t going to be easy, and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.

The production is designed by a multi award winning team and is the first time that the Netflix drama has come to life on stage at the Pheonix Theatre in London.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things began life in 2016 and went on to amass over 140.7 million views globally. The Eighties soundtracks saw it reboot classics sounds of the past including Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” that cast new life into a next generation of fanhood.

Pharrell Williams – Louis Vuitton Men’s Fall Winter 2024

Encompassing 76 looks this debut collection of Pharrell Williams draws a light on the American culture that sees the nature of an affiliation between cultures.

This mixture of attire was met with a Native’s song that was categorized by a strong beat of drum and a setting set by Pharrell with an intoxicating mixture of verses by his musical affiliates.

From the Cowboy to the American Dandy, this is a reflection of the birth of something rustic in the American philosophy of style consciousness.

This was a true awakening to the proactive habits and mantra of a masterful designer whose visions have been collected by the brand of Louis Vuitton.

A bold exchange of colours, textures, tailoring and craftmanship have made this an intriguing partnership showing the best concepts of a creative dream.

The Brooklyn Museum – Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys

This is the story of the artwork owned by the pioneers that hit the music scene decades ago and have categorised a love of their culture through sharing a reminiscent encounter of art.

Important figures in the show include Gordon Parks, Kehinde Wiley and Esther Mahlangu, some of many recognised artists in their field.

Parks, Untitled, Miami, FL, 1966

As a celebration of this collection on show, some exhibits will enter the Brooklyn Museum’s permanent gallery exhibition.

This amalgamation of art features over 20 years of art collecting. In 2018 Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) told Cultured magazine “The collection started not just because we’re art lovers, but also because there’s not enough people of colour collecting artists of colour.”

Braithwaite, Untitled

The title of the exhibition refers to different aspects of the renowned assertations of such greats by creators such as Derrick Adams, Arthur Jafa, and Meleko Mokgosi and the term evokes the relationships between the Deans and the artisan subjects.

With over 100 works by Black American and African artists this exhibition has been curated by Kimberli Gant, Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art, and Indira A. Abiskaroon, Curatorial Assistant, Modern and Contemporary Art. The exhibition will be showing at The Brooklyn Museum from February 10–July 7, 2024.

CABARET- The Kit Kat Club at Selfridge’s

It’s show time at Selfridge’s and what better way to celebrate the Christmas season with a musical extravaganza!

A unique bar experience that tells the story not only of the Cabaret in Berlin, it also reflects the evolution of a highly acclaimed London performance.

The Kit Kat Club in Selfridge’s is identifiable by the champagne cocktails and cuvees whilst partnering with dancers at select moments throughout the course of a visit.

The producers of the show itself say “Since our production of CABARET AT THE KIT KAT CLUB opened in London in 2021, both the musical itself and the pre-show entertainment that invites audiences into its world have been widely described as one of the greatest theatrical experiences in the West End. When we heard about Selfridges’ festive theme being ‘Showtime!’, we knew we’d found our perfect partnership, as well as the most brilliant space on their 4th Floor to take the decadence of the Kit Kat Club outside of our building for the very first time.”

This exceptional piece of drama leaves visitors with the chance to purchase memorabilia from the namesake. For five weeks over the festivities the bar will be open from 12pm to 10pm daily, providing an eclectic mix of entertainment.

This formation of the two partnering, be it the most extravagant department store or the West End Production, will allow partakers to view costumes up close, enjoy the repertoire and get merry all under one roof.

Christmas at Claridge’s – Louis Vuitton

In its thirteenth year of partnerships with friends, this time Claridge’s has combined efforts to show a Louis Vuitton tree featured inside two giant size cases.

Created in 1875 the ever-famous Louis Vuitton trunk which depicts “the art of travel” has long been accompanied by the most precious and essential effects.

This large sculptural creation stands with two wardrobe trunks at 5.2 metres

high each, adorned with Claridge’s travel stickers and an oversized travel tag.

Inside the cases there are 15 vertical chrome trunks that stand at different sizes and make the silhouette of a Christmas tree in an Art Deco theme. Scattered amongst the tree in a snowy landscape are 21 Louis Vuitton Mascots, including Father Christmas himself. This all can be found in Claridge’s black and white marble lobby.

Both founded in 1854, there has been a long relationship with the brand, having opened its first London store around the corner from Claridge’s.

With a relationship that is long standing, It is not the first time that Louis Vuitton himself came across Claridge’s. In the 1850s Vuitton became the personal layetier of Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III and her winter residence was Claridge’s.

Claridge’s General Manager Paul Jackson said of the collaboration “Christmas is the most magical time for us here at the hotel and we look forward to welcoming guests and seeing visitors immerse themselves in Louis Vuitton’s world.”

Yoko Ono: Music of The Mind

The Tate Modern is to represent the unprecedented work of Yoko Ono in February 2024. Covering over seven decades of the artist’s showmanship, there will be a theme of the mindset that brought the collection together. Echoing her expressionist pathway there will be more than 200 works including installations, films, music, and photography. The Tate writes that it will reveal a radical approach to language, art and participation that continues to speak to the present moment.

Yoko Ono: One Woman Show, 1960-1971 at MoMA NYC 2015.
“Apple”

Her avant-garde creativity has been shaped through moving in artistic circles in Tokyo and New York and the exhibition starts with her early pivotal roles defined in “instructions”. She takes a humorous attitude to working with the mind, asking her subject to “listen to a heartbeat” and “step in all puddles in the city”. Her craftmanship expresses a gratitude for life and each parody is a moment shared by the mind of the artist. The typescript draft of Ono’s anthology “Grapefruit” will be displayed for the first time at the Tate Modern with her instructions written between 1953 and 1964.

Yoko Ono. Frame from Film No. 4 Bottoms.

The centre of the exhibition will reflect Ono’s five year stay in London from 1966, when she met artists including her husband and collaborator John Lennon. Key features are abstract in the sense that it paints a picture in a stream of consciousness like “sky” which has been ever present in Ono’s life, being a child fleeing the war in Japan, where she found comfort and solace in her core. This collection features Ono’s 1966 SKY TV broadcast of the sky above the Tate Modern.

Ono’s most famous campaign reflects her mentality when she and her late husband sent acorns to world leaders and did a billboard campaign of “War is Over” in 1969. Her work has been a constant evolving patter of humanitarianism and a play on the attention of the beholder. The exhibition reflects the interaction of Ono’s mantras and in this exhibition The Tate has taken its title from Ono’s Music in the Mind concerts and events in London and Liverpool in 1966 and 1967.

Yoko Ono: Music of The Mind is running from 15th February 2024 until 1st September 2024. Tate Members get unlimited free entry to all Tate Exhibitions.
