The V&A: The Burberry Trench Coat

The celebrated British fashion house has announced the introduction of a new exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington.

The Burberry Trench will be showcased in a free display marking the brand’s 170th anniversary.

There will be a selection of rare material brought together from the V&A’s unique collection and Burberry’s own archives.

This will be marking the history of the coat from its original place as practical outerwear to its status as a global icon.

The works shown conclude the creativity of the fashion magnet and the gallery will hold 19 standout runway looks by Chief Creative Officers Daniel Lee and Christopher Bailey.

The heritage of the relationship between the V&A and Burberry will be the foremost message within this exhibition.

Carly Eck, Brand Curator, Burberry, said: ‘As we mark 170 years of the house, we are thrilled to partner with the V&A to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Burberry trench coat – a global design icon rooted in British craftsmanship and a symbol of innovation, creativity and timeless style. A myriad of objects from the brand’s Archive will be publicly exhibited for the first time – from early 20th-century catalogues to a Burberry trench coat worn by fashion designer Hardy Amies.’

The exhibition will be held from 21 September 2026 to 3 January 2027 in the Prince Consort Gallery, V&A South Kensington.
