The Spanish-Mexican painter Remedios Varo (1908-1963) is featured in an exhibition of her surrealist works at Louisiana in Humlebæk.
Known for her originality and her stance as a feminist pioneer, this artist has had renewed attention in recent years.
This will be the first time that the artist’s work will be displayed in Europe and there are many pieces on loan from other museums and private collections in Mexico and the United States.
The Museum writes: With a unique blend of precision and poetry, Remedios Varo conjures a surrealistic pictorial world populated by mysterious musicians, eccentric scientists, strange devices, and travellers in strange interiors and imaginary landscapes.
Her entire captivating universe can be explored in the upcoming exhibition, along with an introduction to her works as she is still relatively unknown in our world.
Believing her own mantra that dreams and realities are the same, she built visual narratives in her work that bears a thread to the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
Along with her captivating story telling she featured an ideology that challenged a woman’s place in civilisation.
With seventy works including photographs, notebooks and private artifacts, we follow her early life in Barcelona and Paris right to her time in Mexico in the Fifties and Sixties.
